Transitive Verb versus Intransitive Verb
Based on whether it requires an object to express a complete thought or not.
A transitive verb is one that only makes sense if it exerts its action on an object
- The girls carry water to their village.
- Juan threw the ball.
- Could you phone the neighbours?
An intransitive verb will make sense without an object. - They jumped.
- The dog ran.
- She sang.
Some verbs may be used both ways.

Avoir (verbe transitif)-
Indicatif = for stating facts
- Présent = j’ai
- Passé composé = j’ai eu
- Imparfait = j’avais
- Plus-que-parfait = j’avais eu
- Futur simple = j’aurai
- Futur proche = je vais avoir
- Futur antérieur = j’aurai eu
- Passé recent = je viens d’avoir
Subjonctif = for stating facts that are uncertain
- Présent = que j’aie
Impératif = for stating commands
Présent = aie
Conditionnel = for stating events dependent on conditions)
- Présent = j’aurais
- Passé = j’aurais eu
To have (transitive verb)
Indicatif = for stating facts
- Present = I have
- Past = I had
- Imperfect = I used to have
- Past perfect = I had had
- Future = I will have
- Immediate future = I’m going to have
- Past future = I will have had
- Recent past = I have just had
