the devils first temptation of Jesus came after Jesus had spent 40 days fasting-how does the devil’s temptation of “turning stones to bread” illustrate the timing of how the devil will tempt us
the devil will tempt us when we are the most vulnerable/ have the greatest need
how does Jesus’ response to this first temptation provide a model for us
Jesus quoted deuteronomy 8:3 “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”. Jesus’ response shows us that we can protect ourselves from temptation by keeping God’s word close to us and we can form habits that rely on God’s wisdom rather than our own
when the devil uses Jesus’ response to tempt him a second time, how does the devil’s mocking of Jesus’ faith illustrate the manner in which the devil will use our own pride against us to get us to give in to temptation
the devil tries to manipulate scripture by quoting Psalm 91 in an attempt to have Jesus “prove” that reliance upon God is the way of life. This temptation happens in our lives when we attempt to “prove” our knowledge of God rather then relying upon him in faith
what does Jesus’ response to the seconf temptation show us about how to responf in humility
Jesus didn’t argue with the devil, nor did he condemn the devil. Jesus simply quoted Deuteronomy 6 “ Do not put the lord your god to the test” which illustrates his peace within God’s provision he didn’t need to prove anything to himself or anyone else
in the 3rd temptation the devil uses the promise of giving “ all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor” how does this temptation illustrate the ultimate decision that each of us has to make
this choice is ultimately about where we place out “treasure” in this life what we “worship” will show where out treasures lies will it be in the splendor of the desires of the physical world or will it be in the peace of living a godly life. Jesus uses Deuteronomy 6 as a foundation of this concept “worship the lord your God and serve him only”
when Jesus began his preaching ministry in Galilee starting for all to “repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near” he was fulfilling the old testament prophecy of ___
Isaiah
Has word of His preaching and healing spread throughout Israel, large crowds began to come hear Jesus preach. At the beginning of Matthew 5 through Matthew 7, the principles that Jesus shared with the crowds and all of us today are detailed. This account of His teaching is known as
the sermon on the mount
The teaching in Matthew 5 begins with nine teachings about when we are blessed. This teaching on blessings is known as
the beatitudes
Why are we Blessed when we are “poor in spirit”?
Because we are acknowledging that we don’t know everything and have a “need” to continually know the God through His Word and the Spirit
What emotional strength are we showing by being Blessed when “we mourn”?
we mourn because we care for others
Why are we Blessed when we are “meek”?
Because we are at peace with relying upon God and don’t need approval from others
Why does being “meek” NOT mean we are being “weak”?
We are strong in our faith and show courage by staying on the course God has for us. In reliance upon Him we are actively seeking recognition or promotion from others – rather we trust God’s path
What do the words “hunger” and “thirst” illustrate about how we seek righteousness?
They are words that describe a deep desire that we can all understand. The same way we feel when really thirsty or really hungry is the desire we should seek for righteousness
What is “righteousness”?
Righteousness is the condition of being in right relationship with the Lord. This can only happen through total faith and dependence upon Christ
What emotional strength are we displaying when we are Blessed for being “merciful”?
We are showing love & forgiveness through empathy – a willingness to see from another’s perspective in order to understand them and thus not be angry or have hatred toward them
How are we displaying our faith when we are Blessed for being “pure in heart”?
That our intentions are to seek God’s will and apply God’s wisdom to every situation. Acknowledging that since we are not perfect, there will be a corresponding humility that we will need to learn and sometimes apologize for actions that were mistakes – even though our intentions were good
What emotional strength are we displaying when we are Blessed for being “peacemakers”?
The ability to control our impulse to blame others, correct others, defend ourselves, compete against others in proving that we are better than others. We display a desire to see others as valuable in the eyes of God, and that each of us are called to use our unique gifts in working together for God’s will
Jesus concludes that we will be blessed when we are “persecuted because of righteousness” – explain why others will show hate and persecution toward us when we are pursuing the teachings Jesus gives?
Because we are focused upon applying the principles Jesus teaches us, other people may not like us because they think we will make them look bad due to behaviors like trying to people-please or take shortcuts, cheat, give a poor effort, complain, gossip or compete with others, etc.
When Jesus teaches us that we are the “salt” of the earth, why does He use the term salt?
Because salt preserves – and we are called to preserve the Word of God so that it will be passed along from
generation to generation
When Jesus teaches us that we are the “light” of the world, why does He use the term light?
Because darkness is simply the absence of light – people who do not know the TRUTH of God’s Message for our lives are in the dark. We are called to be the light of knowledge for them.
Why does Jesus state that He is the “Fulfillment of the Law”?
The “Law” refers to the message given in the Old Testament, which is a guide for the people to live by until the Messiah comes. With Jesus being the “fulfillment” of the promise of the Messiah, He doesn’t take away the “Law” He fulfills it and brings a “New” Testament of God’s relationship with humanity
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on murder?
Murder is the extreme consequence of angry. Jesus is teaching that we are to be a peace with one another and not have hatred or anger towards another.
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on adultery?
Adultery is the extreme form of acting out on desire. The temptation of this begins when the thought enters our mind. He is teaching that we are in danger of losing our entire mind (and then our body) to a never-ending temptation of this if we do not seek freedom from it
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on making an oath?
Jesus teaches to give a
simple “yes” or “no” in regards to whether you will do something or not. Making a big speech filled with promises about something you will do is only an attempt at convincing yourself or others that you’ll actually do it (and often leads to you not doing it). And making a bunch of promises of why you won’t do something is the same (often leading you to doing the act you made such a big deal that you wouldn’t do)
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on revenge (an eye for an eye)?
The primary teaching is in regards to how we look at others. Seeking revenge is rooted in being hurt and/or
offended by another person. Jesus is teaching us to look at others in love – regardless of how we think we’ve been treated. He teaches us that this act of love is to seek wisdom in how we can give our best to
others. This is an act of faith – we trust that God’s command to treat others in love will be the best decision for us. And we trust that God will take care of us -regardless of how we have been hurt.
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on how to interact with those we consider an
“enemy”?
Having an “enemy” is rooted in a personal belief that you are in competition with someone.God teaches us that we are to seek co-operation with everyone; using our gifts to work alongside others in their gifts to meet the needs of each day.
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on giving to the needy?
That you give to those in need (whether through your time, talent or material items) in order to fulfill what THEY need. Not what YOU can gain from it (attention, acclaim, etc.)
What principle does Jesus share in regards to His teaching on prayer?
That God already knows what we need, and will provide for all that we need. Our role is to simply go to Him and trust in His provision.
This is our relationship with Him – therefore it is a private exercise.
