last stupid freaking chapter that not necessary at all Flashcards
In 2 Peter 1, Simon Peter provides step-by-step directions on how we can achieve the fulfillment of being called to a Godly Life. List each of the four of the eight steps in developing the Spiritual Maturity required to live a Godly Life -EXPLAIN how each step is required before moving on to the next one:
Faith-a belief in something greater than yourself/ a standard of TRUTH beyond your opinion
Goodness – Due to faith, you seek out how to be “good” beyond yourself and learn the skill
KNOWLEDGE – Due to your attempts at being “good” you gain information on what actions are and are not considered “good”
self-control– Due to your increase in knowledge, you control your impulses to act upon emotions and think through how to respond to given situations based upon what you’ve learn about what the
“good” responses should be
In 2 Peter 1, Simon Peter provides step-by-step directions on how we can achieve the fulfillment of being called to a Godly Life. List each of the last four of the eight steps in developing the Spiritual Maturity required to live a Godly Life -EXPLAIN how each step is required before moving on to the next one:
PERSEVERANCE – Due to your maturity, you have developed the skill to continue on the path you have chosen when problems arise. Instead of giving into the fight (forcing your opinions) or flight (quitting/giving up) response
GODLINESS – The impact upon other people when they witness your ability to maintain your faith and persevere in the face of problems, obstacles and/or disappointment. People are drawn to you to ask why, which provides an opportunity to share your faith with them
KINDNESS – A maturity where you seek out how to assist others in their needs. This results from the skills acquired above which has brought peace to your life which allows you to focus upon others.
LOVE – The ultimate fulfillment of what Jesus has call us to do throughout the moments we are in daily
These 8 steps provide us valuable “direction” and “feedback”. Explain how both will benefit you in achieving your goal of a Godly Life:
DIRECTION – The steps show us the steps necessary in order to reach our goal of fulfilling the call God has placed upon our lives to love God and others
FEEDBACK – The steps will provide us information on how we are doing in progressing from one step to the next in our goal
staying focused upon these 8 steps will fulfill God’s promise to us to be able to participate in the ___ ____ having escaped the ____ of the world cause by ____ desires
divine
nature
corruption
evil
discuss why the first three steps of Peter’s teaching are the hardest
The main reason is the we are inherently selfish and want to live the way we want to live. Therefore, we have “faith” in ourselves to decide what is “good” or not and thus our “knowledge” is based upon what works for our own personal goals. Unfortunately, it often takes us “learning the hard way” before we start to think there may be a way better than our own opinion
when we are set free, Galatians 5:13 teaches us to “not use our freedom to indulge in the ___; rather ___ one another humbly in __
flesh
serve
love
Explain how this teaching provides us direction when we are struggling through the first three steps of Peter’s teaching:
It teaches us the 1st lesson will all need to learn – that life is not about us; but rather how we can use our skills and abilities to serve others.
Galatians 5:19-21 provides an overview of how we will be tempted to gratify the desires of the flesh.
List 8 of the 15 examples provided:
sexual immorality, and idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition
Discuss why it is important to know what these desires of the flesh are:
It provides FEEDBACK regarding any situation we are in. If we find ourselves performing any of these actions and/or thinking about doing them, we have a built in warning system that we are not on the right path in our lives
Discuss the difference between “acting” on the temptations we have to gratify the desires of the flesh and maturing to the point of being free from even having the temptations in the first place.
Illustrates the difference of what is in control of our lives
a. acting upon the impulses of what we are tempted to do
b. recognizing the temptations for what they are and eliminating the thought
Galatians 5 provides an overview of how Christ has set us free. Explain what we are set free from?
Thinking that our choices are actually our own, when in fact they are being determined by our own self-centeredness (sin) that the devil uses to manipulate us – starting with our emotions, which then impacts our thinking
Discuss how the knowledge of why we have temptations in the first place is part of our normal progression towards spiritual maturity.
Understanding that temptations are a natural part of our lives when we first become adults, we can then understand that there “isn’t something wrong with us”. Therefore, we can be at peace in the knowledge that Jesus is with us as we mature one step at a time through the days of our lives. Maintaining the faith that we will eventually mature to the point of the temptations not even coming into our minds
Galatians 5:22-23 describe 9 ways to live by the Spirit – name them:
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Discuss why it is important to know the ways of living by the Spirit:
It provides FEEDBACK regarding any situation we are in. There is a peace of mind that comes from knowing that you are in alignment with the call God has place upon our lives.
In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus is teaching us that how we receive uses the seed as an illustration on how we receive
the word of god
Where is the 1st place that the seed falls and what happens to it?
The seed falls upon the hard path and a bird comes and snatches it up right away
What does 1st place of the seed falling represent in our lives?
We tune out the Word of God whenever someone tries to share it with us because we don’t think it has any value to our lives
Where is the 2nd place that the seed falls and what happens to it?
The seed falls in rocky soil. As it begins to grow it doesn’t have deep roots. When drought or wind come along it doesn’t remain strong and gets removed from the ground and dies
What does the 2nd place the seed falling represent in our lives?
When we listen to the Word of God and are excited about how it adds value and understanding to our lives. But we don’t have deep roots in trusting the Word of God, so when problems or disappointments come in our lives we don’t think God really cares about us and we lose faith that it is worth knowing
Where is the 3rd place that the seed falls and what happens to it?
The seed falls in good soil but grows alongside weeds that are not tended to, therefore the weeds eventually grow within the plant and eventually choke the plant and it dies
What does 3rd seed falling represent in our lives?
When we accept the Word of God but use it to our own advantage instead of for the service and benefit of other people. We do “good acts” so that other people will think we are good (which brings us a benefit), but when we die Jesus won’t know us because we never had a relationship with Him to ask what His will was for our lives.
Where is the 4th place that the seed falls and what happens to it?
It falls in good soil. It is tended to, watered, weeds are pulled and it produces good fruit
What does the 4th seed falling represent in our lives?
When we accept God’s Word and develop a relationship with Jesus and humbly seek His guidance – having faith in the directions and decisions He as for our lives
