Q

What is a ‘Designer Baby’?

A

It is when a couple can choose aspects of their yet-to-be-born baby - such as sex, hair colour/eye colour etc. It is a potential example of Genetic Engineering, but is illegal in most countries.

17
Q

Give an argument for the cloning of humans:

A
  1. It would allow selective breeding to improve the human race
  2. Parents could choose the sex of their child
  3. Cloning creates life from life, and is just an extension of IVF
  4. Changing a single two-cell form of life into two one-cell forms of life and discarding any unwanted cells is not murder. At this very early stage, true life has not began.
18
Q

Give an argument against the cloning of humans:

A
  1. Cloning is ‘playing God’ and interfering with nature
  2. Cloning denies the sanctity of life
  3. A clone would not be a real human with its own separate identity
  4. A clone may not have a soul. If the soul enters the body at conception, then a cloned embryo may not have one
19
Q

What is Embryology?

A

It is the study of embryos, up to 14 days old, to enable scientists to find cures/give knowledge about diseases.

20
Q

What is Genetic Engineering?

A

Genetic Engineering is the changing of of genes in humans, animals or plants to benefit humans.

21
Q

What are Saviour Siblings?

A

Children conceived to be of medical use to an older sibling - such as bone marrow donations, stem cells or transplants.

22
Q

What is Cloning?

A

Producing genetically identical copies of plants, animals (both legal) and humans (illegal).

23
Q

What is Therapeutic Cloning?

A

Creating human/animal clones to take stem cells from the embryos - these can then be used to treat a range of diseases. Illegal.
