Matters and Particles Flashcards
What is the arrangement of solids?
- Close together
- In a regular pattern
What is the arrangement of Liquids?
- Close together
- Random arrangement
What is the arrangement of gases?
- Far apart
- Random arrangement
How do solid particles move?
They vibrate on the spot.
How do liquid particles move?
They move around each other.
How do gas particles move?
They move quickly in all directions.
Why do solids have a fixed shape and not flow?
Because the particles vibrate around a fixed point and don’t move from place to place.
Why can’t solids be squashed?
Because the particles are touching.
How do liquids flow and adopt the shape of the container?
Because the particles can roll over each other, due to the bonds between them not being strong enough to keep them in a fixed position.
Why can’t liquids be squashed?
Because the particles are touching.
How do gases spread out to fill their container?
Because the particles are moving quickly in all directions.
Why can gases be squashed?
Because there are large spaces between the particles.
What are the limitations of particle theory? (H)
- There are no forces shown between the spheres
- Atoms, molecules, and ions are not solid spheres
What is kinetic theory?
The theory that as the temperature of a substance increases, with an increase of either, or both, the average kinetic energy of particles or the average potential energy of separation of the particles.
