Matter Vocabulary Flashcards
Atoms:
Building blocks of matter
Made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons
Element:
A pure substance, all the atoms have the same atomic number/number of protons
Nucleus:
The center of an atom, it contains the protons and neutrons
Proton:
Particles that have a positive (+) charge
Neutron
Particles that don’t have a charge and are therefore NEUTRAL
Electrons:
Particles that have a negative (-) charge
Strong force
This holds the nucleus together, keeping the protons and neutrons together
Atomic number:
The number of protons and electrons found in an element
Atomic Mass:
The mass of an atom
Shells:
Energy levels where the electrons are found
Valence electrons:
The electrons in the outermost shell; determines bonding
Matter from smallest to largest?
Atom, Element, Molecule, Compound
Molecule:
Groups of atoms chemically joined together ( smallest particle of one substance
Compound:
Substance made up of molecules that contain more than one kind of atom
