Bonding Unit Flashcards
Ionic bond:
Transfer of valence electrons from one atom to another so that both atoms end up with a full shell
Covalent bond:
Sharing of valence electrons between two atoms to fill the outer shell of both
Are Lithium and Nitrogen going to form an ionic bond or a covalent bond?
Ionic: Lithium wants to give away one of its electrons so that it has a full outer shell, and nitrogen needs one
What bond will Hydrogen and Fluorine form?
Covalent: Hydrogen only has one electrons so it has to share with fluorine for both of them to have a full outer shell
What is the format for the amount of valence electrons in each shell?
1st shell: 2
2nd shell: 8
3rd shell: 8
Every shell past 3rd: 8 maximum
