Matter around us 1 short Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass.
What is matter made up of?
Atoms.
Characteristics of particles of matter?
1] They are very small.
2] They have interparticle spaces between them.
3] Particles of matter are continuously moving.
4] They attract each other.
What is diffusion and what factors affect it?
The intermixing of particles is called diffusion.
1] More temperature increases the kinetic energy
2] Pressure also increases the kinetic energy
How do you convert c to kelvin and kelvin to c?
1] C to k add 273.15
2] K to c subtract 273.15
Define melting point.
The lowest temperature at which solid melts to become a liquid is called its melting point.
what is the punch tatva
Indian philosophers classified matter as the punch tatva - air, water, sky, earth, and fire.
Define boiling point.
The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling is known as its boiling point.
What is humidity?
The air holds water vapor, this air with water is called humid air and the phenomenon is called humidity.
Give two properties of solid.
1] Solids have fixed shapes and are rigid
2] Solids are hard to compress
What will happen if the pressure is reduced on solid carbon dioxide (dry ice)?
It will directly change into the gaseous state without melting.
Name any three substances that show sublimation.
Ammonium chloride, camphor, and mothballs.
What is normal atmospheric pressure?
The atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1 atmosphere and taken as the normal atmospheric pressure.
