Matter And Materials Flashcards
What are the three forms in which matter exists in?
Matter exists in 3 forms, called pahses/states, solid, liquid and gas
What is the definition of Matter?
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass
What are the 8 physical properties of Matter?
Strength, Flexibility, Malleable, Ductile
Boiling Point, Melting Point, Electricity Conductivity, Magnetisim
What is the boiling and melting point of a substance mean?
Boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas, and melting point is the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
What is the process called where a substance changes from a solid to a gas?
This process is called ‘Sublimation’
How is mining harmful to the environment?
Mining generates huge amounts of waste and in the process water become polluted with harmful chemicals
What happens when you smelt a ore in a furnace?
Smelting produces greenhouse gases, which is bad for the environment
What is ‘fracking?’
Fracking is a form of natural gas extraction that involves pumping millions of gallons of pressurized chemically treated water into shale formations/coal beds
What is the group of plastics called?
The group of plastics is called Polymers
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is the process of separation used to separate a solution of solid and liquid
What is distillation?
Distillation is the process of separating two liquids that have different boiling points
