MATTER AND ITS PROPERTIES Flashcards
Anything that occupies space and has mass and volume
Matter
Composed of small particles that are attracted to each other, and are constantly moving
Matter
Matter has three main states:
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Definite volume, High density, Low compressibility
Solid
Definite volume (takes shape of the container), High density, moderate compressibility
Liquid
Indefinite volume, Low density and High compressibility
Gas
What are involved during the measurement of the property
Physical and Chemical Properties
Properties dependence on the amount of matter:
Intensive and Extensive Properties
Properties of a substance that can be observed (by looking, touching, tasting, smelling, or feeling the material)
Physical Properties
Measured without changing the substance’s composition
Physical Properties
What are the examples under Physical Properties
- Color
- Hardness
- Density
- Ductility
- Malleability
Appearance of an object with respect to light it reflects
Color
The ability to resist deformations
Hardness
Amount of mass over a volume of a substance
Density
The ability of a substance to be stretched into wire
Ductility
The ability of substance to be hammered into thin sheets
Malleability
Only physical properties can be classified as
Intensive or Extensive
Change their value when the amount of matter or substance is changed (dependent on amount of substance)
Extensive Property
What are the examples of extensive property?
- Mass
- Volume
- Length
Amount of matter in an object
Mass
Space occupied by matter
Volume
Measurement of an object’s greatest dimension
Length
Does not change their value when the amount of matter is changed (independent on the amount of substance)
Intensive Property
What are the examples of intensive property?
- Boiling point
- Melting point
- Density
