CHEMICAL EQUATION Flashcards
Process in which one or more substances are changed into new substance with different physical and chemical properties
Chemical Equation
Follow the law of conservation of mass (No atoms are created or destroyed; they are just rearranged)
Chemical Equation
Energy in the form of heat is added to the reaction
triangle
Represents the gaseous product of a chemical reaction
Arrow
Types of Chemical Reactions
- Combination or Synthesis
- Decomposition
- Single Displacement
- Double Displacement
- Combustion
Involves two or more elements or compounds reacting to form a bigger compound (product/s)
Combination or Synthesis
(A + B = AB)
A single compound as a reactant is broken down into two or more simpler substances (can either be elements or compounds)
Decomposition
(AB = A + B)
One element replaces another in an ionic compound; a metal can replace the cation in the compound while nonmetals can replace the anion component
Single Displacement
(A + BC = AC + B)
Two ionic compounds exchange ions
Double Displacement
(AB + CD = AD + CB)
Special type of reaction; a hydrocarbon (compound containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only, in some cases with oxygen) reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water
Combustion
