Matter and Chemical Change Flashcards
What are alkali metals?
Alkali metals are a group of elements on the periodic table that are in the first row.
What are the properties of Alkali metals?
- They are softer than most metals
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- Explode if exposed to water
Where are Alkaline metals found and what are its properties?
They are found in group 2.
- They are extremely reactive
- They aren’t found freely in nature
- Radium is an alkaline earth metal
Rare Earth Elements
They are found in groups 3-6-7
- There are 30 Rare earth Elements
- Many are synthetic or man made
Transition Metals
-Iron, cobalt, and nickel, are the only elements known to produce a magnetic field
Other Metals
-Found in groups 13-15
- Are metals solid with high density
-ex. Tin, aluminum, and lead
What are Metalloids?
Elements that have metal and non-metal properties
- Some are semi-conductors meaning they can carry an electrical charge under certain conditions
- Are great for computers and calculators
