Matter and Change Flashcards
what happens when the number of protons does not equal the number of electrons
the particle will be charged and become an ion
what are isotopes
isotopes are the same element with the same number of protons. isotopes however have a different number of neutrons, meaning the mass number changes.
what is a physical change
a change where the same chemical substance remains, same particles remain (but change distance), and intermolecular bonds are made/broken
examples of a physical change
ripping paper, phase change (liquid to solid, etc), dissolving in water
what is a chemical change
a chemical change is when a new substance is formed, and intramolecular bonds are made/broken. often, a reaction such as color change, heat production, and smoke can be observed as a result of chemical changes
examples of a chemical change
burning paper, digestion
law of conservation of matter
matter cannot be created nor destroyed. Atoms just rearrange
formula for a chemical creation
REACRANTS -> PRODUCTS
old bonds break -> new bonds made
