Matter and Change Flashcards
Matter
Anything that takes up space
Volume
Amount of space in an object in any 3-D object
Substance
Particular type of matter
Mixture
Material made of 2 or more different substances that are not chemically bonded, variable composition
Physical Properties
Properties observed without changing the substance, ex. color
Chemical Properties
Observed by changing the substance, ex. rusts
Extensive Properties
Used to identify a substance, depends only on the amount of matter, ex. mass
Intensive Properties
Depend on the type of matter, ex. odor
Solids
Have matter that can’t flow and has a definite volume
Liquids
Take the shape of their container, flow, and have a definite volume
Gases
Have no volume, shape, or flow
Vapor
Substance currently a gas, also a liquid and solid
Chemical Change
Another name for a chemical reaction, a new form of matter is formed
Heterogenous Mixture
Mixture is not the same place to place, ex. salad
Homogenous Mixture
Mixture that is the same throughout, ex. tap water
Filtration
Separating solids from liquids with a barrier
Distillation
Separating substances because they have different boiling points
Magnetism
Separating substances that have magnetic properties from those that don’t
Separating with Density
Separating substances because they have different densities, ex. oil and water
Chromatography
Separating substances because some are attracted to paper/gel and move at different speeds towards it
Solution
Homogenous mixture, (mixed molecule by molecule) keeps the properties of its components, doesn’t create anything new
Element
Substance that is the simplest kind of matter that can’t be broken down any further
Compound
Substance that can be broken down by chemical methods, made of molecules, when it is broken down it’s components have completely different properties
Chemical Reaction
When 1 or more substances are changing into new substances, has new properties
