Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
What is NOT concerned matter?
Anything that is not matter is energy of some sort (electricity, heat, light. etc.)
Chemistry is the study of…
matter and the changes it undergoes.
What are some PHYSICAL properties of matter? List at least 10 please.
- State- Solid, liquid or gas
- Cohesion- Ability to stick to itself
- Adhesion- Ability to stick to other substances
- Melting point- Temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid
- Boiling point- Temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
- Colour- Colour of an object
- Lustre- Shininess
- Conductivity- Ability of a substance to conduct electricity or heat
- Density- Amount of mass in a given volume
- Ductility- Ability of a substance to be stretched into wire
- Hardness- Ability of a substance to resist being scratched
- Malleability- Ability of a substance to be made into a sheet
- Viscosity- Resistance of a fluid to flow
What are some CHEMICAL properties of matter? There are two.
Qualitative and quantitative
What is a quantitative characteristic? Give an example.
Quantitative property is a property of a substance that is measured and has a numerical value, such as temperature, height, and mass.
What is a qualitative characteristic? Give an example.
Qualitative property is a property of a substance that is not measured and does not have a numerical value, such as colour, odour, and texture.
What form of measurement do scientists use to measure things (what system)?
Scientist use the metric system to measure things.
There are physical changes that can take place to matter, as well as chemical changes. Please give me the clues that you would use to tell if each has occurred.
Chemical change clues:
Matter changes from one kind of material to another
Atoms that make up the material do not change but instead change the way they link up
New substances can have very different properties than old substance
Energy is either taken in or given off
Physical change clues:
Does not change the way the atoms link up
Substance may look different but no new substance has been formed
Chemical properties are not changed
No energy taken in or given off unless there is a change in state
Basic units of measurement for
length: _________
mass: ________
volume: _________
mass: g or kg volume: ml or cm3
In your own words, what is mass?
The more matter that is in an object then the more mass it has.
In your own words, what is volume?
Volume is the amount of space a three dimensional object takes up.
In your own words, what is density?
Density is the mass of matter per unit volume.
Write the equation that can be used to find density:
Density= Mass
Volume
Write the equation that can be used to find volume:
Volume= Mass
