Electricity Flashcards
What is the law of electric charges
- Objects that have opposite charges attract one another.
- Objects with the same charges repel one another.
Definition of charging by friction
Charging by friction the transfer of electrons between two neutral objects (made from different materials) that occurs when they are rubbed together or come in contact.
Definition of charging by conduction
Charging by conduction (Contact) 2 objects with different charges come in contact and electrons are transferred
Definition of charging by induction
Charging by induction charging a neutral object by bringing another charged object close to, but not touching, the neutral object
What’s static electricity?
Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charge on the surface of an object
What’s static shock?
Static shock when electrons flow through you to get to the ground
What’s amperes?
Amperes (A) the amount of current flowing through the wire in a given time
Current flowing through the wire in a given time
What is a conductor?
Conductor a material that lets electrons move easily through it
What is an electric circuit?
Electric circuit a continuous path in which electrons can flow
What is an electric current?
Electric current a measure of the rate of electron flow past a given point in a circuit measured in amperes
What is a load?
Load the part of an electric circuit that converts electrical energy into other forms of energy
Eg a bulb
What is the potential difference?
Potential difference the difference in electrical potential energy per unit charge measured at two different points measured in volts
Measuring the change in energy carried per charge in some parts of the circuit measured in volts
What is a source?
Source Its job is to supply electrons (electricity)
Source where the electricity is created
Eg a battery
What’s a switch?
Switch device in an electric circuit that controls the flow of electrons by opening (or closing) the circuit
What’s a resistor?
Resistor device that reduces the flow of electric current
What ohms law?
Ohm’s Law is the relationship between voltage and current.
Why does lighting occur?
Lightning is an electric discharge that occurs between clouds or between clouds and the ground.
What is grounding?
grounding connecting an object to a large body, like Earth, that is capable of effectively removing an electric charge that the object might have
What’s a conductor?
Conductor (wire) a material that lets electrons move easily through it
Definition of Voltage
Is like the amount of pressure causing the current to flow through a wire
Pressure causing current to flow
Definition of current
Flow of electrons passing certain point in a circuit in a particular period of time
Flow of electrons at a time and spot
Definition of resistance
Ability of the source to produce current
Counteracts ability of the source to create current
Advantages to parallel circuits
- Light bulbs are brighter
- One goes out the rest stay on
- Can turn on (off) one at a time
Advantages of series circuits
- Less wiring
- More battery life
What’s the triangle to figure out voltage, current and resistance?
V
I R
If current or resistance goes up voltage must go…
Up
If current goes up resistance goes…
Down
If resistance goes up current must go…
Down
