Matter Flashcards
What is an aqueous solution?
An aqueous solution is a homogeneous mixture of particles dissolved in water,
What is a chemical change?
A change in the composition which results in the formation of new substance(s)
What is chromatography?
A technique in which mixtures are separated by difference in the component’s polarity.
What is a compound?
A substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined.
What is a diatomic element?
An element whose usual form consists of two atoms bonded together.
What is distillation?
The process in which the components of a mixture are separated by differences in their boiling points.
What is an element?
A substance which contains atoms of a single type (all having the same number of protons).
What is entropy?
A measure of the randomness or disorder in a system.
What is filtration?
The process of separating the insoluble components of a mixture from the soluble components.
What is heterogeneous?
A mixture in which the particles are not mixed uniformly throughout the mixture. Since the mixture is not uniformly mixed, various samples of the mixture can have different percent compositions.
What is homogeneous?
A sample of matter in which the particles are uniformly mixed or distributed throughout. A homogeneous sample of matter does not have visible parts and various samples should have the same percent composition.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume.
What is a mixture?
A physical combination of substances.
What is a molecule?
Atoms covalently bonded together. A molecule is the smallest unit of a covalently bonded compound.
What is a physical change?
A change in a substance that does not affect its composition; a change in the form or appearance without changing the identity of a substance.
