Bonding Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a bond in which electrons are shared. The elements in a covalent bond are all nonmetals.
When are Roman numerals used in the name of a compound?
Roman numerals are used when the metal in an ionic compound has more than one oxidation number.
The Roman numeral indicates the charge of the metal.
What is a nonpolar covalent bond?
In a nonpolar covalent bond, the electrons are shared equally by the atoms in the bond. The bonds are shared equally because the atoms have the same electronegativity.
In terms of subatomic particles, why are metals good conductors?
Metals are good conductors because metals have mobile electrons.
What is a polar molecule?
A polar molecule is a molecule with an asymmetric charge distribution. Because of the asymmetric charge distribution, the molecule has an end with a partial positive charge and an end with a partial negative charge. Polar molecules are also called dipoles.
What is the octet rule?
The octet rule states that atoms will gain, lose, or share electrons to have eight electrons in their valence shell. This gives them the electron configuration of a noble gas.
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is a bond in which electrons are transferred from a metal to a nonmetal.
What is a polar covalent bond?
A polar covalent bond is a bond in which the electrons are shared unequally because of the electronegativity difference between the two elements in the bond.
What is a nonpolar molecule?
A nonpolar molecule is a molecule with symmetric charge distribution.
