Matter Flashcards
3 states of matter
Solids
Liquids
Gases
Characteristics of solid
-it cannot move unless someone moves it.
-it keeps its shape -unless it is broken
-the volume of a solid is always the same
Eg: a lump of coal
Liquid matter
Characteristics
It can flow
A liquid has no shape but It takes the shape of the container it’s in
The volume of a liquid stays the same (pouring it from one container back to first container, the volume doesn’t change but shape will
Eg: water
Gas matter (characteristics)
- a gas can flow and will spread As far as it can
- a gas can change shape
- a gas can also change volume (ie: it can expand or be compressed)
Changes of state
Water- ice = freezes
Ice-water= melting
Water- steam= boils/evaporates
Steam-water= condenses
Condensation:
The changing of a gas to a liquid
Sublimation:
Some solids- when heated change directly from a solid to a gas. Eg: soid carbon dioxide (dry ice)
Melting:
The changing of a solid to a liquid
Freezing:
The changing of a liquid to a solid
Melting point:
The temperature at which all of the solid is turned into a liquid
Boiling point:
The temperature at which all of the liquid is turning into a gas
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles in a liquid of gas, from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until the particles are evenly spread
Matter
Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass
