Acids examples
Everyday acids: lemon juice!(citric acid), rain water (carbonic acid), vinegar
Lab acids: hydrochloric acid (HCI), sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
Base examples
Everyday bases: toothpaste, bleach, indigestion tablets
Lab bases: sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), limewater Ca (OH)2
pH scale
Scale which runs from 0-14, indicates the level of acidity or basicity of a substance
Indicators
Substances which change colour depending on the pH of the solution in which they are placed eg. Litmus, universal
To find pH of a substance
Place substance in a test tube
Add universal indicator and observe the colour change.
Compare the colour produced with the colour chart provided
This will tell you the pH of the substance
Difference between universal indicator and litmus
Universal indicator can you if a substance is an acid or base and the strength of the acid or base
Litmus can only tell if a substance is an acid/base or neutral
