Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Matter is whatever occupies space, has mass, and is perceptible to the senses in some way.
What does the Law of Conservation state?
Matter cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change physical state.
What are the three states of matter?
- Solid
- Liquid
- Gas
Give a common example of the various states of matter.
H2O or water.
What happens to liquid water when it is boiled?
It becomes steam, which is the gas state.
What happens to liquid water when it is frozen?
It becomes ice, which is the solid state.
How does the chemical property of water change when its state changes?
The chemical properties of water do not change; only the physical state changes.
What is mass?
Mass is the measure of the quantity of matter in an object.
Does mass change based on location in the universe?
No, mass does not change based on where you are in the universe.
How can mass be changed?
By adding or subtracting atoms or molecules.
What is the formula relating weight and mass?
Weight = Mass x Gravity.
What is the acceleration due to gravity on Earth?
32.2 feet per second per second.
What is weight?
Weight is the measure of the pull from gravity acting on the mass of an object.
What is attraction in terms of matter?
Attraction is a mutual force acting between particles of matter that tends to draw them together.
What does porosity mean?
Porosity means having pores or spaces where smaller particles may fit.
Define impenetrability.
Impenetrability means that no two objects can occupy the same place at the same time.
What is density?
Density is the weight of a substance per unit of volume.
What is the density of water at 4 degrees Centigrade?
62.4 pounds per cubic foot.
How does temperature affect density?
Temperature changes volume, not weight, and therefore slightly changes density.
What is specific gravity?
Specific gravity compares the density of an object to that of water (for solids and liquids) or air (for gases).
How is specific gravity expressed?
As a ratio and expressed as a pure number.
What device is used to measure specific gravity of liquids?
A hydrometer.
What does a hydrometer measure?
It measures specific gravity of liquids by floating and being read where the surface of the liquid meets the device.
What is the specific gravity of water?
1000 or 1.0.
