Matter Flashcards
MATTER
Has volume and mass.
Matter is made of atoms.
ELEMENT
Has only one type of atom.
The periodic table of elements lists all know elements.
ATOM
The smallest particle of an element that is still that elements.
MOLECULE.
A group of two or more atoms bonded together.
If the molecule is made of one element it is an element. If it is made of two or more it is a compound.
PARTICAL.
A tiny part of matter that is usually a molecule or atom.
Chemical change
A change in mater where one or more new substances are made.
Molecules are broken apart and rearranged Into different molecules with different properties.
Physical change
A change in matter where no new substances are made.
3 ways matter can have a physical change are size, shape, and state
Chemical change hints.
Color change Oder change Gas production (bubbles) Temperature change Texture change
Definitive indicator
How we know for sure there was a chemical reaction.
The presence of a NEW KIND OF MATTER shows us that there has been a chemical reaction.
Solid
Particles very attracted to echother.
Vibrate
Stay in a fixed position.
Liquid
Attractions not as strong as solid.
Random arrangement
Slightly further apart
Tack shape of container.
Gas
Particles have very week attractions to echother.
Move freely past echother.
Fills and tacks shape of container.
Conduction
Energy is transferred by fast moving particles hitting slower moving particles.
Condensation.
Water vapor slows down to overcome their speed and become a liquid.
Evaporation
Liquid particles gain energy and break away from echother to become a gas.
