Earth Science Flashcards
Geological process
Events that occur over and over again throughout Earth’s history to change the surface of the Earth.(Weathering, erosion, deposition, and plate tectonics.
Weathering
Breaking up or dissolving of rock and soil into pieces.
Erosion
The carrying away of rock and soil that creates holes.
Deposition
The dropping of dirt, eroded rock, and soil in piles at a new location.
Layers of Earth
Earth is made of 4 layers
Crust: Thin and brittle
Mantle: Thick liquid
Outer core: Liquid, melted rock
Inner core: Solid
Connective currents
A temperature difference within a fluid causes a hot fluid to rise and a cold fluid to sink. This Causes Earth’s plates to move=plate tectonics.
Igneous
When molten rock (magma/lava) cools into a rock.
Sedimentary
Layers of sand / gravel pushed onto its self until it turns into a rock.
Metamorphic
When igneous or sedentary rocks is put under enough heat and pressure to change.
