Matter 1 Flashcards
What is matter?
anything that takes up space and has mass.
What is matter MADE of?
atoms and molecules
What are some EXAMPLES of matter?
food, animals, clouds, soccer balls
What is chemistry?
the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
What is physical properties?
how it looks, how it feels, how it smells, how it sounds, what it does
What are chemical properties?
they tell whether or not an atom will combine
What are some physical changes?
a charecteristic that can be solid, liquid, gas, mixing, or solution
What are chemical changes?
when you make something new and you can’t undo it
How many elements make up the matter of the universe?
about 100
What is an element?
a pure substance that cannot be broken down into anything smaller
What is the smallest piece of matter called?
atom
How many different types of atom make up an element?
1
What is formed when atoms combine by joining electrons?
a molecule
What is a compound?
elements combine in a fixed ratio to make a compound
Is a compound’s properties different than the elements that make it up?
yes
What is a fixed ratio?
a chemical formula
What is a mixture?
something that is together but has not been chemically combined
What are the two types of mixtures?
heterogeneous and homogeneous
What are heterogeneous mixtures?
when you can see the different parts
What are homogeneous mixtures?
when you cannot see the different parts
Where do you find electrons in an atom?
in the electron orbit
Are electrons charged positively or negatively?
negatively
Where do you find protons and neutrons?
in the nucleas
What charge are protons?
positive
What charge are neutrons?
no charge
What do scientists define matter as?
anything that has weight and take s up space
What is an example of abstract?
a dream
Does matter contain energy and can be converted from one form to another?
yes
What is a physical change?
an alteration in the form of matter but not in it’s composition. like solid to liquid.
What is a chemical change?
when one type of matter is converted into another, like how iron rusts.
