Maths Flashcards
If the discriminant is negative, what does that tell you about the roots of a quadratic?
There are no real roots.
If the discriminant is 0, what does that tell you about the roots of a quadratic?
There are two equal roots
If the discriminant is positive, what does that tell you about the roots of a quadratic?
There are two unequal real roots
How do you find the area of a triangle when you know two sides and the angle between them?
0.5 x a x b x sin C
What is the sine rule?
a/sin A = b/sin B = c/sin C
What is the normal cosine rule?
a^2 = b^2 + c^2 - 2bc cos A
What is the cosine rule for finding an angle?
Cos A = b^2 + c^2 - a^2
——————-
2bc
How do you prove two triangles are congruent?
SSS, AAS, SAS, RHS
How do you prove two triangles are similar?
All the angles match up, all three sides are proportional, any two sides are proportional with the same angle between them
What does mutually exclusive mean?
They can’t both happen at the same time.
How do you calculate the possibility of either of two mutually exclusive events happening?
Add their individual probabilities
What is the universal set? (E)
Everything in the rectangle around the venn diagram
What is the union of A and B (U)
Everything in the circles
What is the intersection of A and B? (N)
Everything that is in both A and B
What is the complement of A?(‘)
Everything in the rectangle that isn’t in A
What does a negative index law mean?
Reciprocal
What does the denominator of a fractional index mean?
Which root of it you need to do
What does the numerator of a fractional index mean?
The power
How is LCM calculated?
List all prime factors that appear in either number and if a factor appears more than once in one of the numbers, list it that many times. Multiply these together to get the LCM.
How is HCF calculated?
List all prime factors that appear in both numbers then multiply them together.
