Algebra Flashcards
Define a term
In Algebra a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together.
Define an expression
In mathematics, expression is a finite group of algebraic terms and mathematical symbols combined with no equal or in equality sign.
Define an equation
A statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =).
Define a formula
A special type of equation that shows the relationship between different variables.
Define an identity
An equation that is true no matter what values are chosen.
What does factorising a quadratic mean?
Putting it into two brackets.
What is the standard format for a quadratic equarion?
ax^2 + bx + c = 0
What does solving a quadratic equation mean?
Making it equal zero.
How do you factorise quadratics?
You need to find numbers that add or subtract to give ‘b’ and multiply to give ‘c’.
What do negative powers mean?
Turn it upside down
What do fractional powers mean?
The denominator is the root. 5^1/3 means the cubed root of 5.
What is a fibonacci sequence?
Add the two previous terms to get the next one.
What are triangular numbers?
The numbers of dots required to make triangles
1, 3, 6, 10, 15
What is the position to term rule?
The rule that allows you to find a term in a sequence when you know its position.
What is the nth term?
The position to term rule using n to represent positon.
What is the term to term rule?
The rule that allows you to find out the next term once you know the one before it.
What is an arithmetic sequence?
A sequence which goes from term to term by subtracting or adding a set amount.
What is a geometric sequence?
A sequence which goes from term to term by dividing or multiplying by a value.
What is discrete data?
Data that can only take certain values- like shoe size.
What is continuous data?
Data which can occupy any values, depending on levels of accuracy. For example distance travelled.
