Q

How do you work out order of magnitude

A
  1. Start by writing the number in standard form e.g 6762km to 6.762 × 10^3 km
  2. if number is less than 5, the order of magnitude is 10n. But if number is equal to or greater than 5, the power of ten is rounded up by one, so the order of magnitude is 10n+1. e.g 6 is greater than 5 so order of magnitude will be 10^3+1 = 10^4

Q

What is the order of magnitude of the average lifetime of unstable ‘sigma plus’ particles, 0.7 × 10^−10 s?

A
  1. write in standard form : 7x10^-11
  2. 7 is greater than 5 so 10^-11+1
  3. order of magnitude = 10^-10
