Math Section II Flashcards
Mean, median, and mode are all measures of what?
central tendency
What is a measure of central tendency?
a value that is the central position of a data set
What is mean?
the average of a set of numbers
How do you calculate mean?
add the numbers in a data set and divide it by the number of numbers in the data set
What is median?
the middle number in a data set written from least to greatest
How do you find the median of a data set with no single middle value?
average the 2 middle numbers together
What is mode?
the number that appears most often in a data set
What are the modes a data set can have?
no mode, one mode, or more than one mode
What is range?
the difference between the largest and smallest numbers in a data set
What is an outlier?
a value that is extreme, meaning it is much smaller or larger than the other numbers
What type of data display allows us to summarize the shape of a data set?
a stem-and-leaf plot
How is the data in a stem-and-leaf plot arranged?
by place value
What are the stems in a stem-and-leaf plot?
the digits in the tens place, found on the left of the vertical line
What are the leaves in a stem-and-leaf plot?
the digits in the ones place, found on the right of the vertical line
What are frequency diagrams?
a number line marked with possible values or a range of values, with points indicating each value
What do box-and-whisker plots organize data based on?
range and quartiles
