Q

Decimal Operations

A

Addition and Subtraction: Line up the decimals

Multiplication - multiply ignoring decimal point. Total the digits in original numbers to right of decimal point. Adjust final number so that it has the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point.

Multiplication - move decimal points in numbers in opposite directions to make easier

Division - If decimal point in dividend (number under the sign), just bring straight up and do division normally

Division - if decimal point in the divisor (outer number), shift decimal point in both divisor and dividend (SAME direction) until divisor is whole number. (Compensation)

Q

Tips for Testing Cases

A

1) Follow restrictions - only those that are allowed
2) Try Positive and Negative numbers
3) Odds and Evens
4) Integers and fractions (proper fractions)

5) Value questions - sufficient if there is only one answer, insufficient if 2 or more possible answers

Yes/No questions - sufficient if always Yes or always No
Insufficient if Maybe, or Sometimes Yes, Sometimes No

Q

Tips for Smart Numbers

A

Use only when no real values are used in the question or answers - fractions, percents, relative or using variables

Follow given constraints. If have to pick more than one variable, pick diff numbers. Pick with different characteristics

Avoid choosing 0, 1, or numbers already in problem.

Choose numbers that work easily. 100 is often best for percent problems, fraction problems, use common denominator
