Math Concept Reviews Flashcards
What are the rules for adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers?
if the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the same sign; if the signs are different, subtract the smaller number from the larger number and keep the sign of the larger number
What are the rules for multiplying and dividing negative and positive numbers?
Multiplying a negative and a positive results in a negative.
Multiplying two negatives results in a positive.
Dividing a negative and a positive results in a negative.
Dividing two negatives results in a positive.
What are the steps to add and subtract fractions?
- Check the denominators
If the denominators are the same, you can skip to step 3. If the denominators are different, you’ll need to find a common denominator. - Find the common denominator
You can find the common denominator by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. - Rewrite the fractions
Multiply the numerator and denominator of each fraction by a number so that the new denominator is the LCM. - Add or subtract the numerators
Keep the denominator the same
What are the steps to multiple and divide fractions?
Multiplying fractions
Multiply the numerators together and then multiply the denominators together. For example, to multiply 7/15 by 3/4, you would multiply 7 by 3 to get 21 for the numerator, and then multiply 15 by 4 to get 60 for the denominator. The answer is 21/60.
Dividing fractions
To divide fractions, you can use the “keep, change, flip” rule:
Keep the first fraction the same.
Change the division sign to multiplication.
Flip (or take the reciprocal of) the second fraction.
Multiply the numerators together.
Multiply the denominators toget
FOIL
First, Outside, Inside, Last
How do you find the LCM?
list the multiples of each number until you find the smallest one they share, or use prime factorization to break down the numbers into their prime factors and then multiply the highest power of each prime factor together
Order of operations (PEMDAS)
Parentheses: Solve any operations inside parentheses or brackets first
Exponents: Solve any exponents next
Multiplication and division: Solve all multiplication and division from left to right
Addition and subtraction: Solve all addition and subtraction from left to right
