Maternal & Social Behaviors Flashcards
define concaveation
mothers who show motherin behaviors wihtout hormonal influence
what influences maternal behavior?
- hormonal priming : progesterone, estrogen
- neural stimualtion of passing offspring through vaginal canal : oxytocin release
- stimulus from neonate : scent of amniotic fluid, facial characteristics, erratic movements, care seeking behvaior
define phermone
chemical secreted by animal that influences developmnt of animals from same species
define altricial
requiring nourishment neonates that are born helpless, very dependent on mother as they are born in early development, mother is lateral recumbent for feeding
examples of altricial animals
dog, cat, rabbit, primate, rat
define preocial
neonates born who are able to move and forage at early age, born in alte development with sight and hearing, mother is stadning for nursing
example of precocial animals
horse, cattle, pig, chicken
define hiders
neonates are kept in nest or close to birthing site while mother hunts/forages, altricial special, protect from predation
examples of hiders
dog, cat, rabbit, cattle, goat, pig, some birds
define followers
neonates walk or run with mother shortly after birth, leave birthing site so no nesting, can run from predators
examples of followers
sheep, horse, duck, chicken
intervals of bonding
- time neonate is accepted
- time mom recognizes neonate
- time of separtion after initiatl bond
define imprinting
development of recognition & attraction to members of their own species or surrogates based on vision and hearing, immediate and long lasting learned
define bonding
relationship between mother and young using oral and tactile cues, both used by altricial and precocial mammals
define social facilitation
behavior which is initiated or increased by presence of another animal engaging in behavior, helps with group synchronization and protection
