Maternal Health Flashcards
What are some causes for maternal death?
Childhood malnutrition, too early marriage, poverty + illiteracy, denial of equal rights, denial of health services, poor obstetric care
What is obstetric care?
Caring for women after conception, throughout pregnancy, and during childbirth
What are some direct causes of maternal death in childbirth?
Hemorrhage, preeclampsia, sepsis
What are some indirect causes of maternal mortality?
Anemia, diabetes, malaria, TB, hepatitis, HIV
What are some direct causes (in LMIC) for maternal mortality?
Obstructed or prolonged labor, obstetric fistula (tearing), genital prolapse, anaemia, hypertension during pregnancy
What helps mitigate maternal mortality?
Good care, family planning and legal abortions
What are the three delays?
Delaying seeking care, identifying and reaching facility, receiving care
What does TLTL mean in maternal health?
Care with inadequate resources, below evidence-based standards, care unavailable until it’s too late, underlying health issues
What does TMTS mean in maternal health?
Over-medicalisation of normal pregnancy, unnecessary use of bad interventions, the interventions not used right
How many maternal deaths are due to unsafe abortions each year?
65000
What are some complications from unsafe abortions?
Sepsis, hemorrhage, UTI, GTI
Why is being a first child more dangerous?
Higher percentage of health problems during pregnancy for mother, less experienced, poorer intrauterine growth
Why is it dangerous to be a 5th child or worse?
Maternal depletion syndrom (worse intrauterine growth), cumulative effects from prior injuries, less time and resources
Why is being born in short intervals dangerous for the second child?
Competition for resources, inadequate maternal recovery, increased exposure to infections
Why is being born in short intervals dangerous for the first child?
Increased exposure to infections, early termination of breastfeeding
