Look out for these signs
Stages of growth (developmental milestones)
protocols in weight measurement
Weight is recorded in kg and checked every month for a year from birth, then every 3 months from year 1 to 2, then every 6 months from 2 to 5 years old.
Protocols in length
Length is measured in cm every 3 months from birth to age 2 then subsequently every 6 months from 2 to 5 years.
Nature of curve if EBF is done
If exclusive breastfeeding well done, the child’s curve should be parallel to any of the curves drawn.
Where plot is made
Since it is a monthly visit, the plot is ideally made in the middle of the box, and not on the line.
What’s the significance If the deviation continues for 3 consecutive months
Failure to thrive
What is the significance when the plot climbs upwards too steeply
it may suggest an endocrine/ metabolic problem or sheer obesity
Nutritional counselling done when
6wks, 14wks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 18 months and 24 months
Continuum of care pointers
at least four antenatal care visits;
delivery assisted by a skilled birth attendant; and
three postnatal cares within initial 48 hours, at 2 weeks, and on sixth weeks postpartum
