What is maternal mortality?
The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management
What is maternal morbidity?
Severe health complications occurring in pregnancy and delivery not resulting in death
What is the maternal mortality ratio?
Number of maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in that same time period
What is the maternal mortality rate?
Number of maternal deaths per 100 000 women of reproductive age in that same time period
What is the proportionate mortality ratio?
maternal deaths as a proportion of all deaths of women of reproductive age in that same period
What are direct, indirect and late deaths with regard to maternal mortality?
Direct - obstetric complications / during labour or prepartum / from any treatment received directly related to pregnancy
Indirect deaths - associated with a disorder whose effect was exacerbated by the pregnancy
Late deaths - >42 days after, but within one year of the pregnancy
What are the biggest causes of maternal mortality?
Haemorrhage
Unsafe abortion
Hypertensive disorders
What are some of the best means of preventing maternal mortality?
Antenatal care and screening
Skilled attendant at birth
Emergency obstetric care available (C-section / induction of labour / blood transfusions)
How are child deaths classified according to hows far before / after birth the baby dies?
Before birth: Stillbirth (can be antepartum or postpartum)
Neonatal death: death within one month of live birth (can be early - 1 week, or late - >28 days)
Infant mortality: death within 1 year
Child mortality: death within 5 years
What are some of the practices essential to newborn care?
- Ensure baby is breathing
- Start exclusive breastfeeding right away
- Keep the baby warm
- Wash hands before touching the baby
