Maternal And Perinatal Mortality Flashcards
What is the global burden of maternal and perinatal mortality?
1 maternal death every 2 minutes, >99% less developed countries and >80% preventable.
Maternal mortality is a public health indicator with greatest gap between rich and poor countries
Perinatal mortality includes stillbirth, early neonatal (<= 1 week), late neonatal (<28d).
What are some definitions with mortality, what data sources are used and how can measurements be a challenge?
Definitions
- maternal mortality: death of women whilst pregnant/within 42 days of termination but not from accidental or incidental causes
- maternal morbidity: severe health complications occurring in pregnancy and delivery not resulting in death
- maternal mortality ratio: mat deaths during given time period per 100,000 live births in same time (risk associated with each pregnancy)
- maternal mortality rate: mat deaths in give time period per 100,000 women of reproductive age in same time period (frequency of women exposed to risk)
- lifetime risk of maternal death: probability of maternal death during a women’s reproductive life (risk of becoming pregnant and risk of dying whilst pregnant)
- proportionate mortality ratio: maternal deaths as proportion of al female deaths of those of reproductive age in a given time period
Data sources:
- facility based
- population or community based
Measurements can be a challenge as relies on accurate surveys, verbal methods, accurate results
What are the major options for reducing the magnitude and maternal mortality at a population level?
Good antenatal care
Skilled birth attendant
Emergency obstetric care
Essential newborn care eg breathing, exclusive breastfeeding, keep baby warm, wash hands before touching baby
Every Newborn Action Plan
