Materials Technology Flashcards
What are the three jobs of a passive speaker?
To hold your phone
Direct sound down a small channel
Send the sound into a big opening that broadcasts outwards
What is a passive speaker? + what features does it have? (3)
A passive amplifier is a device which makes sound more directional with the help of a bell shape
Works like a megaphone, designed to transmit into the air as much energy as possible
A bell shape is used to reflect the sound waves in one direction
The wider the bell shape, the better you can hear the sound
What does enviromental impacts on society mean?
Environmental focuses on preserving and restoring the natural resources and ecosystems
What does social impacts on society mean?
Social focuses on addressing social justice, equity and the well-being of communities
What are the key enviromental impacts? (3)
Landfll - pollution, habitat destruction, greenhouse gases
Pollution - air pollution, human health, eco system
Deforestation - loss of biodiversity
What is the product life cycle?
raw material, extraction, manufactoring, distrubution, in use, disposal
What does raw material and extraction contribute to?
depletion of natural recources, energy consumptions, water usage
What does manufactoring contribute to?
energy consumption, pollution, waste generation
what does distrubution contribute to?
greenhouse gas emmisions, fuel consumption, packaging waste
What does in use contribute to?
energy consumption, water usuage, chemicals
What does disposal contribute to?
waste generation, toxicity
What are positive social impacts?
makes life easier, connection and accessability, impact on heath and lifestyle
What are negative social impacts?
Connection, impact on health and lifestule, pressure
What is linear economy?
In a linear economy, once you’ve used something, it’s typically thrown away, and it becomes a waste. This means the resources that were used to make the phone are essentially “lost” after you’re done with it.
What are the four stpes of linear economy?
Take: Resources are taken from the earth to make the phone. This includes
materials like metals, plastics, and minerals.
Make: The materials are processed and manufactured into a phone.
Use: You use the phone for a while, maybe a couple of years.
Dispose: Eventually, the phone breaks or you upgrade to a new one, so you throw it away.
