Oil painting process pre-1850s

A
  1. Construct canvas using wooden frame, stretch linen over the top
  2. Size using rabbit skin glue
  3. Prime with 2-3 coats of gesso. Lightly sand to create a smooth surface.
  4. Apply a warm- toned groundstain (imprimatura)
  5. Complete an under drawing using charcoal or graphite to map out composition
  6. Dead colouring using only black and white
  7. Apply thinned transparent glazes of pigment, wait till each is bone dry- reflect light from the colour beneath
  8. Varnish after 6 months

  2. prime with 2-3 coats of gesso. Lightly sand for a smoother finish
  3. Complete an underdrawing using graphite or charcoal.
  4. Alla prima wet on wet technique- apply oil paints while still wet to allow blending and continuous manipulation.
  5. Varnish when fully dry
