Oil painting process pre-1850s
A
- Construct canvas using wooden frame, stretch linen over the top
- Size using rabbit skin glue
- Prime with 2-3 coats of gesso. Lightly sand to create a smooth surface.
- Apply a warm- toned groundstain (imprimatura)
- Complete an under drawing using charcoal or graphite to map out composition
- Dead colouring using only black and white
- Apply thinned transparent glazes of pigment, wait till each is bone dry- reflect light from the colour beneath
- Varnish after 6 months

- construct canvas
- prime with 2-3 coats of gesso. Lightly sand for a smoother finish
- Complete an underdrawing using graphite or charcoal.
- Alla prima wet on wet technique- apply oil paints while still wet to allow blending and continuous manipulation.
- Varnish when fully dry
