What is a ferrous metal
A metal containing mostly iron and carbon.
They are magnetic and will rust
What is a non ferrous metal
A metal that doesn’t contain iron
Noy magnetic and doesnt rust
What is an alloy
It is a mixture if two or more metals or combining two or more elemts providing thta one is a metal
What is a hardwood
Wood from a broad leafed (deciduous) tree, these trees are generally slow growing
What is a softwood
Wood from a coniferous (cone baring) tree. These trees tend to grow fast and are evergreen
What is a manufactured board
A man made wood based composite material.
What is a thermoplastic
A material which can be repeatedly reheated and reshaped, allowing it to be recycled after its initial use
What is thermosetting plastic
A material when heated gows under a chemical change where the molecules form rigid cross links, thus means it cannot be reheated and reshaped.
What is an elastomer
A material when at room temperature can be deformed under oressure and upon release of oressure will return to its original shape.
What are paper and boards
They are complient materials, meaning they can be scored, folded and cut to form nets for packaging
What is a composite
A material comprised of two different materials to enhance its propeties
What is a smart material
A material whose physical propeties change in response to an input or output change in the environment such as electricity, pressure, temperature or light
What is a modrrn material
A material developed through the invention of new or improved processes
