What are key features of modernism

A

Form follows function, the aesthetics of a product is dictaded by the way it works.

Embracing the machine age, bauhaus was similar to the arts and crafts movement in that it rebelled agaist ornamentation of designs but differs in that the machines allowed for better finishes

Geometrically pure, inspired by art deco

Everyday products for everyday people, producing products everyone can afford, products designed for easy mass production

A

Streamlining followed art deco with the use of flowing curves and smooth exteriors with chrome detailing in its architecture.

The application of streamlining to house hold objects such as clocks and fidges was sen as a sign of modernity

A

Bold and colourful playful designs, memphis designs challenged the simplicity of modernism and often used a range of colours as wll as contrasting colours

Simplistic juxtaposition of geometric forms, memphis used geometric forms but the position of these could seem quite random

Challenging forms that often compromised on function
