Strength
Ability for a product to withstand force without breaking or deforming
Toughness
Ability to withstand sudden impacts without fracturing
Hardness
Ability to resist scratching abrasion or wear
Stiffness
Ability for a product to resist deformation with applied force
Thermoplastic
Can be heated and cooled repeatedly without compromising the properties of the material. Any waste can be recycled
Thermoset
Like an egg it can be heated or reshaped, however is stronger and more heat resistant
Additives
Mixed with plastic to make it last longer be cleaner, safer more colourful e.g.
Epoxy Resin (ER)
Thermoset. Low Shrinkage, Strong and excellent adhesive qualities. Normally used for bonding application and surface coatings.
Melamine Formeldahyde (MF)
Thermoset. Tasteless, waterproof, ouderless, scratch resistant and an electrical insulator. Normally used on worktops, buttons and clothing.
Polyester Resin (PR)
Thermoset. Can be flexible formed without pressure or heat, hard and an electrical insulator. Normally used on car body parts.
Urea Formeldahyde (UF)
Thermoset. Electrical Insulator, good adhesive properties, hard and stiff. Normally used in electrical fittings
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
Thermoplastic. Chemical Resistant, strong and high surface finish
Cellulose Acetate
Thermoplastic. Flexible, hard, light and transparent
Polyamide (PA) Nylon
Thermoplatic. Durable, easily machined and self lubricating and tough
Polyethylene (HDPE)
Thermoplastic. Chemical Resistant and tough
Polyethylene (LDPE)
Thermoplastic. Stiff, hard and easily machined
Polypropylene (PP)
Chemical Resistant and Light
Polystyrene (PS)
Light stiff water resistant
Polyvinyl Chloride (Plasticised)
Soft, flexible and electrical insulator
Polyvinyl Chloride (uPVC)
Abrasive Resistant and water and weather resistant
Ferrous Metal
Contain Iron. Inexpensive, but corrosive and needs maintenance or a surface finish
Non-Ferrous
Resistant to corrosion as it has no steel
Alloys
Mixing two or more materials with one containing metal. Can give it better qualities
Cast Iron
Corrosive, strong and self-lubricating
Mild Steel
Strong, Tough reasonably malleable, corrosive
High Carbon Steel
Malleable, corrosive
Stainless Steel
Tough, ductile and corrosion resistant
Tin
Soft, ductile and corrosion resistant
Lead
Heavy, malleable, soft and corrosion resistant
Aluminium
Soft, good strength to weight ratio, light and high resistance to corrosion
Copper
Good heat/ electrical condictor, high resistance to corrosion.
Brass
Good heat/ electrical condictor, high resistance to corrosion and harder than copper
Bronze
Resistant to corrosion
Zinc
Soft, maluable and high resistance to corrosion
Hardwood
Deciduous trees, slow-growing take more maintenance
Softwood
Grow faster, cheaper and less maintenance
Manufactured Board
Man Made, normally made from waste products, availability in large sheets and ease of manufacture
Oak
Hardwood, Strong, Durable, Hard, Tough and will stain steel
Mahogany
Hardwood, Strong, Easy to Work and Durable
Beech
Hardwood, Strong, tougher than oak, straight-grained
Scots Pine
Softwood, Straight grained, fairly strong and good workability
Red Cedar
Softwood Light, Soft, Weak and weather durable
Spruce
Softwood Non Durable, Straight Grained, Light and Good Elasticity
Plywood
Stable, Strong, and Easy to Machine
Hardboard
Weak, brittle, hard on one side soft on the other
MDF
Easily Machined, Moulded and Painted

Realtiveley weak and inexpensive
