Materials Flashcards
What is Hooke’s Law?
Extension produced is directly proportional to the force that’s causing the extension, up to the limit of proportionality.
What is the elastic limit?
The point at which a material will no longer return to its original shape / length.
What does the area under a force-extension graph represent?
Energy
What is the Young Modulus?
Material constant used to work out how a material will perform under a load.
Tensile stress / tensile strain
What is tensile stress?
Stress = Force / Cross-sectional area
What is tensile strain?
Strain = Extension / Original length
What is the gradient of a Stress-Strain graph?
The Young Modulus.
What is the property of a plastic material?
Very small elastic region, lots of strain for little stress.
