Materials Flashcards
What is the 3 types of bricks?
Facing, Class A/B engineering bricks and Common bricks
Why would you use a facing brick?
Facing bricks have a good aesthetic, weather resistant, durable and aesthetically appealing
Where would you use a facing brick?
You would use a facing brick when the build is above ground, external walls and aesthetic walls.
Why would you use a Class A/B engineering brick?
You would use an engineering brick for high compressive strength, high toughness, low water absorption, high water resistance, Frost Resistant, acid resistance.
Where would you use a engineering brick?
Engineering bricks are used is underground structures, manholes and sewers.
Why would you use a common brick.
Common bricks and low compressive strength, bad appearance and are cheaper.
Where are common bricks used?
Internal walls and filling
What are aerated bricks used for ?
Aerated bricks are used because of their characteristics of being lightweight, prone to impact damage, good insulating properties and medium strength
Where would you use an aerated brick?
Aerated bricks would be used bearing walls and partitions.
Why would you use a high density block?
A high density block is durable, tough, has high strength and is a port insulator.
Where would you use a high density block?
Load-Bearing walls
Why would you use a insulated concrete form (ICF)?
ICF are used of ringer locking to crate formwork, poured around steelwork to stabilise the walls and integrated mineral wool insulation for thermal performance
Where would you use a insulated cement form?
You would use a insulated cement form for single skin load-bearing walls.
Why would you use cement mortar?
You would use cement mortar because is very strong , very hard, water resistant and quick setting
Where would you use cement mortar?
Often used to join engineering bricks or applications where there is little movement.
What is the characteristic of a lime mortar?
A type of concrete brick which is soft and slow setting.
What is the use of lime mortar?
The use of lime mortar is the repair and restore old buildings due to the fact the mortar looks like stone building materials. Lime mortar also brings up all the moisture to above the ground.
What is the characteristic of lime mortar?
Hard, water resistant and quick setting.
What is the use of lime mortar ?
Lime mortar is used as a filler material, it also can handle movement and settling without cracking .
What is the characteristic of coloured mortar?
A coloured Morgan is used for decorative and it’s exterior.
What is the use of coloured mortar?
The use of coloured mortar is used to match the existing material for design reasons
What is the characteristic of building sand?
Building sand is fine sand that contain grains which are 125-250 um
Where would you use building sand ?
Building sand would be used in mortar and block work.
What is the characteristic of sharp sand ?
Sharp sand is a coarse sand with grains about 0.5-1.0mm
Where would you use sharp sand ?
In concrete applications
What is the characteristic of silver sand?
Fine silica sand which grains are 60.-125um
