Forces And Stress Flashcards
What is tensile?
A pulling force
What is compressive?
A squeezing force
What is shear?
A cutting force
When does stress occur?
Strew occurs when an object is being pulled apart
What can stress do to a shape?
Stress cause cause plastic deformation
Do all properties react the same to stress?
Different properties react differently to stress. e.g stronger materials resist better to stress compared to weaker materials.
What is hardness?
Hardness is the measure of how much plastic deformation a shape can resist.
What is mass?
Mass is the weight of the object
What is density
Density is how compact the shape is
What is volume?
The amount of space it takes?
What is strain?
Strain is when the material is subjected to lots of outside applied stress.
Fracture toughness
A material ability to resist fracture under shock loading or impact.
What is surface hardness?
Surface hardness is the materials ability to resist plastic deformation
What is malleability?
Malleability is the material ability to deform when being squeezed
What is workability
Workability is how easy something could be handled when being mixed, handled, shaped, smooth and finished.
