Materials Flashcards
Where are the subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons and Neutrons are in the nucleus, and electrons are in the surrounding space.
What is the charge of each subatomic particle?
Proton: +ve
Neutron: No charge
Electron: -ve charge
What is the mass of each subatomic particle?
Protons and neutrons have a mass of 1, and electrons have 1/1800.
What is the atomic number?
The atomic number is the no. of protons, and it determines what element it is. The number of electrons is generally the same. In a box, it is in the bottom left corner.
What is the mass number?
Number of protons + neutrons.
It is approximately the average atomic mass.
How do you figure out the number of each subatomic particle from a mass number and atomic number.
Protons and electrons = atomic number
Electrons = mass number - atomic number
How many electrons can be found on each level?
2, 8, 18.
n=2n^2
What are valence electrons
The number of electrons in the outermost energy level.
What are periods and groups on the periodic table?
Groups - column
Periods - row
