Materials (110101j) Flashcards
What is an alloy?
When metal contains a combination of two or more metals.
What is Perforated metal?
Starts as a sheet. Which then holes are punched into it. Perforated metal is commonly used in sheet metal for sound attenuation.
Hardware cloth (Bird screen)
Steel wire woven together and dipped in molten zinc to help protect corrosion. Used to cover openings. To prevent unwanted pests.
Brittleness
Brittleness in a metal is the ability to withstand distortion. (How long until they shatter)
Conductivity
May refer to heat conductivity or electric conductivity. Flow of heat or electricity.
Ductility (diving board)
The ability to withstand stretching, bending or twisting past its elastic limit without breaking or losing mechanical properties.
Elasticity (Diving board)
Elasticity is the ability for metal to bend and come back to its origin point after forces have caused the metal to become deformed.
Hardness
Hardness is the ability of a metal to resist forces that tend to push the molecules apart.
Malleability. (Hint Ball)
Withstand mechanical processing such as rolling, forging and hammering without cracking or breaking.
Strength
Amount of high, steady stress the metal can withstand before yielding or breaking.
Toughness
Ability to withstand an impact load.
Heat treatment
(3 categories)
Combination of heating and cooling of metal.
Annealing
Quenching
Tempering
Annealing (Heat treatment)
Process used to release the internal stress in hardened metal. Heating the metal to a pre determined temperature.
Quenching (heat treatment)
2nd step of heat treatment. Rapid cooling of metal that is heated by immersion in water or oil.
Tempering (Heat treatment)
Tempering is the increasing the toughness and decreasing the hardness in hardened steel.
