Materialism Flashcards
what is materialism?
the idea that there is only physical substance
what is supervenience?
a shape depends on what is made of and their relation
types of identity
personal
qualitative
quantitative- this one is used in MBIT
what is MBIT
all mental states are certain brain states
arguments pro MBIT
the simplest explanation
we already have the empirical data
causal role analysis= if you ask someone what something is they will tell you what it does
Ockham’s razor= cut out the entities that you don’t need and you remain with what you need -> it is more parsimonious to accept that all mental states are certain brain states
arguments con MBIT
Multiple Realizability= you can make things in different ways
Leibniz’s law= if two things are the same, that means that they both have the same properties. if one of them has a property the other one does not have, they are not the same anymore
