Material Terms Flashcards
Paint needs two things, what do each of the things do?
Pigment : what gives it color
Binder : what holds it together, both when it’s liquid and when it’s dried
What are binders also known as
Vehicles
Name, common types of paint and their binders
Acrylic: acrylic polymer (plastic) gel
Egg tempura : egg yolk
Encaustic : wax
Fresco : plaster
Oil paint : drying oil (linseed)
Watercolor : Gum Arabic
What are the three parts of painting structure?
The paint (wet or dried)
The ground (surface that is painted on)
The support (Backing, foundation, or carrier for ground)
What is priming?
The process of preparing the support with a ground or primer
Why do we need a barrier between support and oil paint?
Supports will rot/become brittle
What is a size?
A penetrating liquid used to make a surface suitable to receive coats of paint ( we are using an acrylic ground, which does the work of both size and ground, but if we didn’t have that we would need to use rabbit skin glue????)
What is Gesso?
A liquid material applied as a coating to the support. It is usually made with white pigment such as chalk and mixed with aqueous binder, such as hide based animal glues.
What is used to thin or clean away paint
Solvent or thinner. Solvent for oil painting is Turpenoid, which needs to be used cautiously
What is medium (singular) and media (plural)?
Refers to the general material or practice used to make a work of art, such as fibers or painting, but in a painting context, medium might refer to the liquid that is added to the paint to change its texture and drying qualities (usually 50% mineral spirit and 50% linseed oil is used, though this will vary)
