Material Selection Flashcards

1
Q

What is material selection?

A

The properties of materials need to be considered when designing a product
E.g. a steel handle on a cooking pan would conduct too much heat and burn the user

Q

What is absorbency( selection criteria when picking a product)?

A

The ability to soak up water, light or heat
Good products: cotton and paper
Bad products: polystyrene

A

How solid a material is
Equation: density= mass/ volume
Dense: lead and oak

Q

What are other considerations to material selection?

A

Malleability= how easy to bend eg steel
Toughness= material hard to break or snap eg Kevlar
Strength= the ability of a material to withstand compression and tension eg diamond
Hardness= the ability to withstand impact without damage eg oak
Elasticity= something that can be stretched and return to its original state eg elastane in swimming trunks
Ductilibility= materials that can be stretched eg copper

16
Q

What is board made from?

A

Much thicker than paper and card and are typically heavier than 220 gsm

17
Q

What are polypropylene physical and working properties?

A

Physical- thin plastic sheet in a range of colours
Working- strong and flexible and excellent resistance

18
Q

What are duplex board physical and working properties?

A

Physical- two layers of card are bonded together
Working- stiff and lightweight

19
Q

What are inkjet card physical and working properties?

A

Physical- bright white and smooth on both sides
Working- deep colours as the photographic ink sits on the surface

20
Q

What is laminated layers?

A

Paper based boards

21
Q

What are foil based packaging physical and working properties?

A

Physical- consists of paper based board layer and thin Aluminium foil
Working- easily printed and thin aluminium foil ensures food freshness
