Housing
Overcrowded, no garden, no computer, siblings to look after, having to move regularly, share room. Cold or damp house. Diet can also affect child’s achievement.
What did Howard 2001 say?
He said younger people from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins and minerals. This affects health like immune systems which lowers children’s energy levels this results in more absences and less concentration.
Tanner 2003- cost of education
Found that the cost of items such as transport,Uniforms, books, computers places a heavy burden on poor families. As a result many children may have to make do with hand me downs and cheaper equipment.
What do Mortimore and Whitty 1997 argue?
Material inequalities have a greater effect on achievement than school factors. For this reason Robinson 1997 argues that tackling child poverty would be the most effective way to boost achievement.
