How can poor housing affect a child’s education?

A

Overcrowding — can make it harder for children to study as there may be nowhere to do homework and concentrate on learning

Temporary housing — may have to move frequently, changing schools and disrupting education

Children in crowded homes have greater risk of accidents and ill health resulting in more time off school

Lack of heating can cause health problems resulting in time off school

How can poor diet and health affect a child’s education?

A

Poor diet can weaken immune system and lower energy levels leading to more absences

Children from a low social class are more likely to skip meals

Lower class children are more likely to have asthma due to damp, mouldy homes, resulting in more absences

Children from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins and minerals
